Wely
Dutch edit
Etymology edit
First attested as apud vuelie towards the end of the 11th century. Etymology unknown. Potentially of non-Germanic origins. A proposed derivation from dialectal welie (“large eel trap”) (cognate with Old English wilige (“basket made out of withies”)) clashes with the oldest attestation of the toponym.
