Dutch edit

Etymology edit

First attested as apud vuelie towards the end of the 11th century. Etymology unknown. Potentially of non-Germanic origins. A proposed derivation from dialectal welie (large eel trap) (cognate with Old English wilige (basket made out of withies)) clashes with the oldest attestation of the toponym.

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): /ˈʋeː.li/
  • Hyphenation: We‧ly

Proper noun edit

Wely n

  1. A hamlet in Neder-Betuwe, Gelderland, Netherlands.
