Dutch edit

Etymology edit

First attested as Wintrachen in 1595. Etymology uncertain. Proposed derivations from Gallo-Roman Latin *Vinderiacum or *vinitoriacum (place where wine is produced) are unsatisfactory. An interpretation of the toponym as "location that is subject to a lot of wind" (cf. Heurtebise) is also unconvincing, as is that which seeks to derive the toponym from Middle Dutch *Winnerack (strip of land owned by a tenant). Perhaps comparable to Wintbraken.
