  • (Friesland) First attested as Sandbuyren in 1664. Calque of West Frisian Sânbuorren, a compound of sân (sand) and the plural form of buer (house, cottage).
  • (Noord-Holland) First attested as Zand Burem in 1839-1859. Compound of zand (sand) and the plural form of buur (cottage, small house). The element zand was added to distinguish the settlement from Noordburen.
