Etymology
editFirst attested as in zitart in 1366. Presumably derived from Middle Dutch sitter (“common land”) (indirectly derived from Latin sectura (“common land”)) with epenthetic -t. An alternative hypothesis proposes a derivation from Old High German sigituri (“section of forest intended for logging”) (derived from Latin secretarium). Compare Sittard, Zittard and Zittert.
