  • (Drenthe) First attested as suthwalda in 1275. Compound of zuid (south-, southern) and wold (marsh forest, swamp forest). See also Dutch Low Saxon Zuudwolde.
  • (Groningen) First attested as up zutywolde in 1399. Compound of zuid (south-, southern) and wold (marsh forest, swamp forest). The element zuid was added to distinguish the settlement from Noordwolde. See also Dutch Low Saxon Zuudwôlde.
