From Malay aftab, from Classical Malay افتب (aftab), from Classical Persian آفتاب (āftāb), from Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ʾptʾb /āftāb/, “sunshine”), from Proto-Iranian *abi-tāpáh; ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *tep- (“to heat, to be warm”).
