Compound of amë (“mother”) and vis (“land, country, settlement”), from Proto-Indo-European *weyḱ- (“house, settlement”) (compare Ancient Greek οἰκία (oikía, “house (clan)”), Avestan 𐬬𐬌𐬚 (viθ, “royal court”)), literally "mother of the house".
