Compound of amë (mother) and vis (land, country, settlement), from Proto-Indo-European *weyḱ- (house, settlement) (compare Ancient Greek οἰκία (oikía, house (clan)), Avestan 𐬬𐬌𐬚 (viθ, royal court)), literally "mother of the house".
