Etymology edit

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *apwalus. Morphologically from ap- +‎ valus, the latter part of which may be from Proto-Indo-European *welH- (to turn, wind).

Cognate with Latvian apaļš (round), and further related to Proto-Slavic *obьlъ (oval), which contains the zero-grade of the root.
