Inherited from Old French arismetique, borrowed from Latin arithmētica (“arithmetic”), itself borrowed from Ancient Greek ἀριθμητική (arithmētikḗ), ellipsis of ἀριθμητικὴ τέχνη (arithmētikḕ tékhnē, “art of counting”), from ἀριθμός (arithmós, “number”).
