Borrowed from English hospital, from Middle English hospital, hospitall, from Old French hospital (Modern French hôpital), from Late Latin hospitālis, hospitāle (hospice, shelter, guesthouse), from noun use of Latin hospitālis (hospitable), from hospes (host, guest). Doublet of oteeļ and wōteļ.
