Etymology

Sometimes connected to Sanskrit वृद्ध (vṛddha, large, big) and Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬛𐬀𐬌𐬙𐬌 (varədaiti, make larger), an Indo-Iranian development. Also sometimes thought to be from Proto-Indo-European *h₁wérus, whence Sanskrit उरु (uru), Ancient Greek εὐρῠ́ς (eurús).
