From Ottoman Turkish آولامق (avlamak, to hunt, to deceive, to dupe),[1] from آو (av, the chase, hunting of any kind, game, prey), from Proto-Turkic *āb (the act of hunting or that which is hunted),[2] equivalent to av (hunt, prey) +‎ -la- (verb forming suffix) +‎ -mak. Cognates with Azerbaijani ovlamaq.
