editFrom Proto-Balto-Slavic *bálˀtas (“faint, white”) (compare Latvian balts), which is generally derived from Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- (“white”) and compared with Proto-Slavic *bòlto (“swamp; mud”); see there for more discussion on the root.[1] Compare also Proto-Slavic *bělъ (“white”).
