barrow + -man. Prior to the introduction of underground tramways, coal was carried on barrows.

- (mining, historical) A putter: one who puts the tubs of coal from the workings to the cranes, flats, or stations, so that they can be conveyed to the surface.
- (historical) A street vendor selling fruit and vegetables from a barrow.
