editLikely ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerHǵ- (“to shine, whiten”), hence closely related to Albanian bardhë (“white”) and Illyrian Βάρδυλις (Bárdulis). Suffixed with a patronymic suffix identical to Ancient Greek -ίδης (-ídēs).
