bench test (plural bench tests)

  1. An individual test of a component, such as an electrical or mechanical device, that is performed with the component removed from its normal operating environment, notionally on a workshop bench.

      When the diesel engine has undergone its bench tests, and the various temperatures, loads and fuel consumptions have been recorded, it is then ready for coupling to the generator.
