Esperanto
editEtymology
editFrom German Bestie, Italian bestia, Latin bestia.
Pronunciation
editNoun
editbesto (accusative singular beston, plural bestoj, accusative plural bestojn)
Usage notes
editSince the very beginning of Esperanto, besto has meant any member of the animal kingdom, including humans. However, because many Esperanto speakers interpret it as meaning "non-human animal", animalo was coined to explicitly mean any animal including humans.
