Inherited from Middle French brosse, from Old French broche, broisse, from Vulgar Latin *brustia, *bruscia, from Frankish *brusti, a metathetic variant of *bursti, from Proto-Germanic *burstiz (“bristle”), or alternatively from Frankish *brusk, from Proto-Germanic *bruskaz (“tuft, underbrush”).
