Vietnamese edit

Etymology edit

From Proto-Vietic *kəc ~ *kɨc (faeces), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ʔic ~ *ʔiə(c) ~ *ʔ(ə)c (excrement; faeces). Cognate with Arem kʉc, Khmer អាចម៍ (ʼac).

This is one of three known cases of velar initial in Vietnamese corresponding to zero-initial in other Austroasiatic branches. The other two cases are củi (firewood) and the dialectal cảy (swollen).
