cenozone (plural cenozones)

  1. A stratum containing a characteristic association of minerals and microfossils.
    • 1965, Herbert Edgar Wright, David Grover Frey, International Studies on the Quaternary, page 145:
      Because of this I have proposed (Ruggieri, 1961) a lower cenozone for the Pleistocene characterized by the presence of A. islandica but by the absence of H. balthica.
    • 1975, Valentin Abramovich Krasilov, Paleoecology of Terrestrial Plants, page 229:
      Turner and West ( 1968 ) suggest that the phases of an interglacial period (cryocratic, protocratic , mesocratic , telocratic ) be considered as cenozones.
    • 1981, The Palaeobotanist - Volumes 28-29, page 395:
      This cenozone is about 30 m thick (Subathu Section) and consists of greenish grey, calcareous splintery shales which may change to pale olive green shale facies in other sections.
