From Proto-Celtic *kawlā (faggot, bundle of sticks), from Proto-Indo-European *keh₂ul-.[1] Cognate with Old Irish cúal (bundle of sticks[2]),[3] Latin caulis (stalk, stem) and Ancient Greek καυλός (kaulós, stalk, stem).
