  1. Doubled and twisted thread, made of coarse silk, and used for tassels, fringes, etc.
    • 1830, John D'Homergue, Peter Stephen Du Ponceau, Essays on American Silk:
      This silk is of two kinds , each of which has its first and its second qualities . The name of sewing silk is exclusively appropriated , in France , to the finest of these two species ; the other is called cordonnet or twist.
