- The part of an engine that contains the crankshaft.
- 1960 January, “The Swindon Type "4" diesel-hydraulic units”, in Trains Illustrated, page 41:
- The crankcase itself is in one piece, in the form of a tunnel into which the crankshaft is introduced from one end.
