From Old Irish cuilenn m ((wood of the) holly-tree) (compare Scottish Gaelic and Irish cuileann), from Proto-Celtic *kolinnos (compare Welsh celyn, Breton kelenn), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱol- (thorn, thorny plant) (compare English holly), from *ḱel- (to cut).
