PolishEdit

EtymologyEdit

From Proto-Slavic *čajьka. The sense of a boat is to be presumed a semantic loan from Ukrainian ча́йка (čájka), given that this word, in any language but Ukrainian, is only put as an exotism for a vessel ascribed to the Zaporozhian Cossacks.

PronunciationEdit

  • IPA(key): /ˈt͡ʂaj.ka/
  • (file)

NounEdit

czajka f

  1. lapwing (bird)
  2. chaika (boat)
