Adverbial form of older dicke (“often, thick”) (thus a doublet of dick (“thick, fat”)) suffixed with -s (adverb-forming suffix), from Proto-West Germanic *þikkwī, from Proto-Germanic *þekuz. Compare Luxembourgish dacks, Kölsch döckes (“much, a lot”), Palatine German deck, Dutch dikwijls.
