Inherited from Ottoman Turkish طالیان (dalyan, “fishweir, fishgarth”), presumed to derive from Byzantine Greek *ἁλιάνειον (*haliáneion, “fishing place”).

1. fishgarth, fishweir, or a fishing station on poles above the water where one looks out for fish and leads them into nets
