Etymology edit
From Middle Irish echtrad, from Old Irish echtra (“tale, narrative, history”), from echtar (“without, outside”), from Proto-Celtic *extros. Doublet of eachtradh. Cognate with Irish eachtra (“adventure”). Compare Welsh eithr (“except, beyond”), Latin exter (“outer”).
