Found in early Old Spanish (10th century) as stiércore (with later dissimilation), from Late Latin stercorem (attested in Pelagonius), masculine accusative singular, from stercus (“dung”, neuter) (whence English stercoraceous), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)terǵ-, *(s)terḱ-, *(s)treḱ- (“manure, dung; to sully, soil, decay”).
