From Ottoman Turkish ازمك (ezmek, to crush, to pound, to bruise, to reduce to weakness),[1][2] from Proto-Turkic *ẹŕ- (to scratch, to scrape, to knead, to press, to grind, to crush, to soak, to dilute, to rub, to smear),[3][4] morphologically ez- +‎ -ci.
