edit13th century. From Old Galician-Portuguese falagueyro (“flatterer”), from older afalagar (modern afagar), probably from Arabic خَلَقَ (ḵalaqa, “to behave kindly”).[1] Semantically influenced by falar (“to speak”), from Latin fābulāre.
