From Proto-Germanic *fandōną (“to find out”), related to *finþaną (“to come upon, find”), from Proto-Indo-European *pent- (“to go, pass, bridge”). Akin to Old Frisian fandia, fandlia (West Frisian fanljen), Old Saxon fandōn, Old High German fantōn (German fahnden).
