  1. The stairs at the front of a building, traditionally those used by the occupants rather than by tradesmen, etc.
    • 2001, A. J. Youngson, The Companion Guide to Edinburgh and the Borders, page 26:
      The two stone arches and forestair and the whole front of the house were built between 1617 and 1620, giving a new front room on every floor, and a new facade to a basically sixteenth century building.
