fusegate (plural fusegates)

  1. A modular spillway sill invented in 1989 to improve dam safety by increasing water storage.
    • 1990, Golden State Floodlight: California Floodplain Management Newsletter, page 70:
The amount of ballast in each fusegate and the elevation of the intake well determine the pool elevation at which a fusegate will tip, that is, rotate downstream.
    • 1994, Task Committee on Overtopping Protection, Alternatives for Overtopping Protection of Dams, →ISBN, page 42:
One or more prefabricated fusegate units are positioned within a precast concrete frame on an overflow spillway crest, held in place by gravity forces. Additional reservoir storage is provided to the fusegate crest.
    • 2000, U. Maione, B. Majone-Lehto, R. Monti, New Trends in Water and Environmental Engineering for Safety and Life, →ISBN:
The purpose of these physical model tests were mainly to measure water pressure distribution into the chamber and on the fusegate structure for a given upstream water head above the fusegate crest.
    • 2013, M.M. Dandekar, K. N.Sharma, Water Power Engineering, →ISBN, page 280:
Ordinary floods spill over the fusegate barrier. Larger floods cause the chamber to fill as the water spills over the well lips (Fig. 9.24 (b)).
