Etymology

edit

From Middle High German gesmac, from Old High German gismac, gismah, from gi- + smac, from Proto-Germanic *smakkuz (taste, flavor). The é vowel is unexpected; perhaps changed under influence of smékhan (to smell). Cognate with German Geschmack: “taste, flavor” (Germany, Austria) or “smell, odor” (Switzerland).
