From Proto-West Germanic *jāmarōn, from Proto-Germanic *jēmarōną (to show misery or sadness), equivalent to ġeōmor (sad) +‎ -ian. Cognate with Old High German jāmarōn (to complain, sigh), Old Norse amra (to howl, yammer).
