Unknown. Possibly from Latin glabrāre, present active infinitive of glabrō, from glaber (“smooth”). Related to dezgheura / dejgheura, itself sometimes considered to derive from a Vulgar Latin root *disglabrāre, or from *disgluberāre, from glubō. Alternatively, related to gheară.
