  2. (countable) a (type of) vegetable

Usage notes

edit
  • Groente is typically not used for a single piece of vegetable; instead that is called (een) stuk groente. However, it is used as a countable noun in both the singular and plural for a particular type (species, genus, cultivar, etc.) of vegetable.
  • The diminutives are chiefly used in Belgium, where they are often used in the plural. While groentetje is the regular form of the diminutive, it is not often used, likely because of its more difficult, less smooth pronunciation. Groentje is the commonly used dimunitive.
