From Proto-Indo-European *gʰrebʰ- ‎(to scratch, dig). Akin to Romanian groapă. Compare Old Norse grǫf ‎(pit, pothole, grave), grǫptr ‎(graving, grave, burial, funeral), Old Church Slavonic гробъ ‎(grobŭ, grave). Alternatively from a southeastern Montenegrin dialectal form (grȍp) of Serbo-Croatian grȍb.
