From Proto-Indo-European *gʰrebʰ- (to scratch, dig). A substratum word, akin to Romanian groapă. Compare Old Norse grǫf (pit, pothole, grave), grǫptr (graving, grave, burial, funeral), Old Church Slavonic гробъ (grobŭ, grave). Alternatively from a southeastern Montenegrin dialectal form (grȍp) of Serbo-Croatian grȍb.
