From Old Norse *grynta from Proto-Germanic *grunnatjaną (to grunt), frequentative of Proto-Germanic *grunnōną (to grunt), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrun- (to shout). Cognate with German grunzen (to grunt), Danish grynte (to grunt).
