From Old Occitan, from Old French guant, from Frankish *want, from Proto-Germanic *wantuz (“glove, mitten”), from Proto-Indo-European *wondʰnú- (“glove”), from the root *wendʰ- (“to wind, wrap”). Cognates include French gant, Catalan guant, Sicilian nguantu and Spanish guante.
