editFrom Proto-Balto-Slavic *gīˀw- (“to live”) (with semantic shift "to live" > "to recover and heal"), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʷeih₃w- (“id”).[1] Cognate with Latvian dzīvot, Proto-Slavic *živěti, *žiti, Sanskrit जीवति (jī́vati), Latin vīvō (“to live”).
