Etymology

Borrowed from Swedish halogen, coined by chemist Jöns Jakob Berzelius based on Ancient Greek ἅλς (háls, salt), due to the nature of halides, the salt compounds that halogens form with metals. By surface analysis, halo- +‎ -geno.
