Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *harakka, derived from Proto-Balto-Slavic *śárˀkāˀ (whence modern Lithuanian šarka, compare also Russian соро́ка (soróka)), see there for further etymology. Cognates include Finnish harakka, Livonian arāgõz, Votic aragõ, Ingrian and Karelian harakka, Livvi harakku, Ludian and Veps harag.
