From Proto-Finnic *hirmu, possibly borrowed from Baltic (compare Latvian širmuļi, Lithuanian šiurpus).[1] Related to Estonian hirm, Karelian hirmu, Livonian irm and Votic irmu. Probably also related to hirveä.
