From Proto-Germanic *hīwiską, *hīwiskiją ‎(household, family), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱei- ‎(to lie with, store, be familiar). Cognate with Old Frisian hīskithe ‎(household unit, household), Old High German hīwiski ‎(household, family), Old Norse hýski ‎(domestic unit, household).
