From Proto-Germanic *hīwiską, *hīwiskiją(household, family), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱei-(to lie with, store, be familiar). Cognate with Old Frisian hīskithe(household unit, household), Old High German hīwiski(household, family), Old Norse hýski(domestic unit, household).
