Pronunciation
editEtymology 1
editNoun
edithoill n (definite singular hoillet, indefinite plural hoill, definite plural hoilla)
Etymology 2
editFrom Old Norse halda. Compare Swedish hålla. Due to apocope, the final vowel is removed while writing. Due to palatalization, the ending -ld use to be written as -ill(j).
Verb
edithoill (present tense hell, past tense hoildt or hoiltj)
- (dialectal, Trøndelag, Northern Norway) eye dialect spelling of halde (“to hold”). (In case of use of "kløyvd infinitiv" it is an e-infinitive verb, because it's got an apocope. The distinction between the two types of verbs in Nynorsk is not used officially after the 2005 spelling-reform)
- (dialectal, Trøndelag, Northern Norway) imperative of halde
