Probably from Proto-Yoruboid *ʊ́-kɔ́, compare with Olukumi ukọ́, Igala úkọ́, equivalent to *ú- (nominalizing prefix) +‎ *kɔ́ (to cough), ultimately of onomatopoeic origin.
