From Ottoman Turkish اینانمق (inanmak), from Proto-Turkic *ïnan- (to believe; trust, rely on). Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (ïnan-), etc.

  1. (intransitive, + dative) to believe, have faith (someone's abilities, chances etc.; someone's existence; the power, value etc. of something; the existence of something)
    Ona inanıyor musun?Do you believe/have faith in her?
    İslâm'a inanıyor musun?Do you believe in Islam?
  2. (intransitive) to believe (someone, in something someone says/does), trust
    Ona inanıyor musun?Do you believe in her?

Usage notes edit

  • When saying you believe someone, either the dative or nominative accusative can be used, however the dative is often preferred.
