Inherited from Latin aestās, aestātem (summer), from a reshaping of Proto-Italic *aissāts, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éydʰ-teh₂t-s, derived from the root *h₂eydʰ- (to ignite; fire). Compare Campidanese stadi.
